Building mindful movement.
The Motus Way:
Our goal in movement is to bridge the gap between health: the state of being, and wellness: the state of living.
We’re not interested in trendy fad diets, exercise programs, and other "quick fix" approaches to wellness. The vast majority of “wellness” fads fail terribly when it comes to addressing long-ingrained poor health and fitness habits.
At Motus, we value simple, proven foundational movement principles informed by decades of experience working with patients who want to feel radically better in their everyday lives. Rooted in science-backed methodologies, our proprietary classes are designed to teach and then challenge key movements–building strength, optimizing mobility, and developing a deeper awareness and understanding of how we operate our bodies in motion. We intend to EDUCATE each person about their body and mind, thereby bridging the existing gap between health and wellness care.
Living healthfully is a lifelong pursuit, and our grounding, energizing movement practices are guaranteed to empower you to feel your absolute best–physically, mentally, and spiritually.
At Motus, our unique yoga classes combine the fundamental principles of yoga and strength training to build a better, stronger, and more knowledgeable mover.
Yoga asana, or postural practice, is rooted in mindful movement. Each practice is designed to help you develop a deeper awareness of your body and its vast potential. The curriculum for each class is aimed at both educating and strengthening, repeatedly illuminating the why and the how behind each movement. Embodying this concept ensures long-term changes. We encourage our students to find depth in the basics; from there, more elusive and challenging yoga postures become accessible.
M-FIT is a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) fitness class that introduces fundamentals while strongly emphasizing movement quality.
We focus on foundational movement patterns (squat, deadlift, etc.), and work to strengthen them by using interval training programs like AMRAP (As Many Rounds/Reps As Possible) and EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute).
Workouts consist of bodyweight and resistance work (weights, bands, etc.), and also incorporate tempo and explosive training.
Whether you’re just starting to become more active or you’re a seasoned athlete, these classes will make you sweat, grow your strength, and build you up.
Mindfulness training isn’t limited to meditation, but it’s a great place to start.
At Motus, we recognize meditation as an essential practice for cultivating awareness and compassion, not only toward others but especially with ourselves.
We meditate to better understand who we are at our core, and how our mind relates to that. Life is sometimes difficult, and while we can’t control what happens, we do have the power to transform how we respond to the challenges delivered to us.
When our patients learn to sit with their minds, they’re training to be more open, at ease, and in touch with their inner resources of calm, clarity, and contentment.
Christie has been a lifelong athlete, however, discovering Ashtanga Yoga at the age of 21 was the catalyst that sparked her studies in movement and her path toward self-discovery. Christie has practiced yoga since 2006 and has been teaching yoga as a full-time career since 2015. In that time, she has led twenty-two 200HR Yoga Teacher Trainings and countless workshops. Since 2016, Christie has trained with some of the best strength and bodybuilding coaches in San Francisco. To develop more niche skills, she also trained with a Cirque du Soleil performer, a circus contortionist and a well-known handstand coach. The combination of these trainings have heavily influenced and shaped her straight-forward, technical and methodical approach in movement. Training with her will build your overall strength, flexibility and body awareness while bringing you to a deeply grounded and peaceful mindset. Christie no longer considers herself “just a yoga teacher”, but rather a coach, movement specialist and hand-balancer.
Since Sal began his practice in massage therapy in 2000, one of the most consistent pieces of feedback that his clients give is how profound his work is—and how unique. It is the kind of bodywork you can only receive from someone who not only deeply cares about his clients’ wellbeing but also knows what it is to go through extreme health challenges and integral healing. Sal’s clients consistently praise his capacity to help them achieve relief from ailments and body pains that have gone unaddressed for years. In addition to more than 2 decades of practice in massage therapy, Sal has also been in the fitness arena since 2001. Before he was picking up barbells, he was putting on weighted vests and making up WODs (*workout of the day*) with other fitness enthusiasts. For Sal, fitness, and massage therapy have always gone hand in hand; and together, these two pillars of wellbeing enable him to continue to serve his clients year after year as they cultivate their capacity to live their best lives. (Being able to lift all the things comes in handy with his two little boys as well!)
